Driving Responsibly in Recreational Areas

Minimise your impact by travelling only in areas open to four-wheel drive vehicles. Every responsible recreational driver should follow these core principles, based on the Tread Lightly initiative.

1. Travel Responsibly

Only drive in designated areas open to recreational vehicles and always follow state road rules.

Stay on designated roads, tracks, or areas open to 4WDs.
Respect cultural, heritage and environmental sites.
Drive over obstacles, not around them, to avoid widening tracks.
Straddle ruts, gullies and washouts — even if wider than your vehicle.
Cross creeks only at designated points.
Avoid muddy areas where possible; reduce tyre spin to prevent rutting.
Never turn around on narrow, steep or unstable ground — reverse to a safe spot.
Stop often to assess conditions on foot.
Lower tyre pressure for traction (generally not below 20 psi).
Know your vehicle’s lowest clearance point to avoid damage and leaks.
Keep a safe distance between vehicles.
Respect signage and always leave gates as found.
Travel in groups of two or more vehicles — never go solo.
Learn and use safe recovery techniques with rated equipment.
Never mix driving with alcohol or drugs.
Leave no trace — take all rubbish with you.

2. Respect the Rights of Others

Be considerate of others sharing the tracks, campsites, and public or private land.

Follow track etiquette; give way to vehicles climbing uphill.
Respect all landowners — seek permission when entering private property.
Be courteous to mountain bikers, hikers, and horse riders.
Slow down and proceed quietly around animals.
Avoid riding near camp or picnic areas without purpose.
Drive slowly around people and campgrounds.
Minimise dust and noise wherever possible.

3. Educate Yourself

Be well-prepared and informed before heading out.

Use detailed maps to know which areas are open to off-road travel.
Plan ahead and inform someone of your intended route.
Check public land manager websites for restrictions and permits.
Monitor weather conditions and pack for emergencies.
Take a 4WD course to develop safe driving skills.
Ensure your vehicle is fit for purpose — bring tools, spares, and a spill kit.

4. Avoid Sensitive Areas

Protect Australia’s natural and cultural heritage.

Stay clear of lake shores, wetlands, and streambeds unless designated for access.
Avoid delicate habitats like living desert soils and breeding areas.
Do not disturb archaeological or historical sites.
Keep your distance from livestock and wildlife — do not approach or provoke them.

5. Do Your Part

Lead by example and protect the outdoors for future generations.

Carry a rubbish bag and pick up any litter you find.
Camp with minimal impact — use established sites and stay at least 60 metres from water sources.
Use proper waste disposal methods or carry waste out with you.
Keep noise levels down — avoid unnecessary revving or poorly maintained engines.
Wash your vehicle before and after trips to prevent the spread of invasive species.
